5 Minutes + 5 Ingredients = Fun for ALL
Yesterday, our youngest’s preschool teachers sent us a tried and true recipe for Homemade Play Dough. I have to be honest, homemade play-dough is THE BEST. It's softer, it cuts easier, it molds easier and it holds color beautifully. And this is coming from my adult self – I can only imagine how my kids feel about it.
We’re in day 5 of school and my two eldest have lesson plans and the 2yo, she just plays. Around the 3pm mark of the day before we hopefully head outside, we need a little bit of action to help us all through. Additionally, any activity we like to involve all three kiddos, so this is also when our littlest wakes from her nap, hopefully ready to take on the remainder of the day. For today, it became play-dough prep! I say prep, because the plan was to make the play dough and color it, and then store it in bags. The plan was to PLAY with the play-dough the following morning. For us, this worked out great as we made it and then enjoyed the fruits of our labor with outdoor bicycle rides to follow.
I can honestly say, Play-dough is fun for all. The whole process did not take much time, mess and was full of smiles. We hope this recipe inspires and offers a bit of a nostalgic wellness break among this new normal.

Sensory Sensational Play-Dough Recipe!
What you’ll need:
- One Bowl for Dry Ingredients
- A large sauce pan for Wet Ingredients on Stove
- Wooden Spoon for mixing slowly
Ingredients:
- 3 Cups Water
- 6 TB Vegetable Oil
- 3 Cups Flour
- 1 ½ Cups Salt
- 2 TB Cream of Tarter
- Food Coloring - because that's the fun part!
Mix all Dry Ingredients - Encourage the little ones to touch!
Mix all Wet ingredients
Place Dry ingredients in the Wet Pan on stove, cook over medium heat. Encourage the senses to feel the heat.
Stir constantly until dough forms (about 4 minutes) and pulls into a ball. Trust me, it will happen.
Knead, add food coloring and play! Store in plastic baggies when done and reuse.
